Ms. Render on Hats…

Sometimes hats just make you truly  SHINE. Recently we interviewed Santina Render , from  Cary, North Carolina, about her hat choices.  She is a graduate of Syracuse University , and majored  in Mathematics.

Why do I love  hats?

‘I look great in hats. The right hat brings an elevated elegance to a dress or a coat.’

When do I wear hats?

Santina is  surely a Southern Belle. She seems to love the sun and  wears hats when socializing  with friends.  She comments:

‘I wear hats mostly to church. I will wear to a gathering with ladies for lunch or breakfast. I will wear  a hat with a sun dress for a stroll in the sun. ‘

 On Legacy…

Wearing hats is part legacy and partly, just me. My mom loves the hats she wears and my grandmother (father’s mom) had many hats. But all her hats were gone from her house when she passed away. I was really sad because no one in the family had them.

Santina says she  also  gains her style from her former first lady,  ( Jahnaje Alex of  Victory Temple, Syracuse, NY )  who had an amazing collection of hats. I have yet to find out wear she gets them from. I would like to own hats of a better quality than your average department store.

Hats generally accentuate my personality.

Kimula in her Clouche!

Why do you like to wear hats?
To keep my head warm. But of course, I must do it in style. It’s another way to promote beauty in my world :-).

Has wearing hats been in your family for a while?
Yep! My granddaddy JC Stenson could rarely, if ever, be caught without one on. It was his signature. And it was always a signal from my grandma Mae that we were “about to go somewhere” like in take a ride when she threw on either a scarf or an old garden hat. I would do my happy dance because I love to go places.

When do you recall enjoying the first time you begin wearing hats and what happened for you in that process?
Now… this is an interesting but hard question. I remember wearing bonnets (matching my Sunday outfits) to take rides with my great-grandfather on his mule and wagon around town. I wore it proudly like I was the Princess of Lagrange GA. You couldn’t tell me anything! But it was not until much later in life that I ventured to wear hats; like in my 30’s when I started to wear natural hair. It seems I became aware of more hat choices. Maybe I believed hat wearing was reserved for the elder women from church.

If you were to convince someone to wear a hat, what would be the reasons you would give?

They keep your head warm and are fashion statement.

When do you like to wear hats and on what occasions?
In fall & winter. At funerals. To football games. To the beach!

Hat Character ~ Darryl Fudge

This Darryl Fudge.
Although she looks mighty cute in her HAT, we are not honoring her for that. She is just a really special person. Anyone who knows Darryl will find that out about her. Just sharing on her character, because every now and then, we need to. Like hats have definition and character, so also does our soul & spirit.  In fact, they shine even brighter, when we wear them. It’s good every now and then to reflect on keeping character, so today, we chose Darryl.

Darryl loves to wear hats and when she does, her sense of YOUTHFULNESS and  her sense of pizzazz comes out! I love this picture of her, because you see a side of her that’s originally a part of her fun-loving personality!

I asked a few people to describe Darryl and here’s what I got from them about her. Aware. Strong. Real. Tenacious. Friendly. Spiritual Master. Caring. Giving. Creative. Unique. Such powerful names. when I leave this earth, I want my (hat)…. ahem.… my life and living to speak for me, like Darryl’s has spoken for her. ( Smile)

Hat Love: Jodie Johnson

Jodie Johnson is a model and entrepreneur that lives in Washington, D.C.

Jodie seems to have that effect on fashion! When she isn’t modeling, she’s running her own business, Agape Couture.

We were able to pull aside this beautiful, cultured and  eccentric model and entrepreneur Jodie Johnson aside to ask her a few questions!

Why do you like to wear hats, Jodie?

I like hats because they create a mystique or persona that you might not otherwise have. I also like that they can add drama to even a casual outfit.

Is wearing hats a legacy in your family ?

I got my love of hats from my grandmother, who is NEVER seen in public without one. Even now at 94 years of age, she still has to have a hat on even just to go for a walk around her neighborhood.

Whats’  your earliest memory of when you began  wearing hats ?

I think I wore my first hat when I was about 9 or 10. My mother took me to a milliner in New York City (where I grew up) and had a gray one made especially for an outfit I was supposed to model in a show. I felt pretty special and grown up and fancy, just like my grandma.

Do you believe a hat can change one’s personality?

Yes, I believe a hat can change your persona. It can make a typically shy, insecure person feel a whole lot of swag.

What ‘s the magic that happens when you put a hat on?

Depending on the style of hat, I feel sort of ‘grand’,  ‘hip’ or ‘hood-ish’… it just depends on the vibe or flava’ I’m trying to give.

I like all kinds of hats: fedoras, newsboy caps, wide hats or a big brim Kentucky Derby-ish hats…I love them ALL. I’ve worn them with a nice dress or a suit, or with jeans and a t-shirt, or with a cute sweater to the movies… it doesn’t matter the occasion.

If I feel “the “vibe”, I just go for it!

Jodie’s mission of Agape Couture Productions is to provide their clients with an experience in fashion that leaves them not just entertained, but inspired and changed for the better. Jodie believes that God wants us to feed our own beauty and to be able to boost our own self esteem and be proud of who we are.

Hat Love: Norma Boyd

Norma Boyd loves hats.  Can’t you tell? She had such pizazz when she recently wore this hat on  a  small trip with her family to Virginia Beach,  we asked  her could we post in on our blog!

She  is 32, and currently lives in  Montclair, VA. She just relocated from Texas with her family of 7  ( and counting…) and they are getting a home built in Spotsylvania, Virginia and loves taking care of her husband.  We interviewed Norma’s love for hats recently and she shared some wonderful insights about women and   the sex appeal of hats.

Why do you like to wear hats?
I like the old-time look. Women used to look so modest, sophisticated and very sexy.
Has wearing hats become a regular practice or a legacy  to leave behind, for you?
This is something that I want to just start doing for me. I love hats and the way a woman can wear it.
I am the first in my family to wear them, and I  actually hope to be able to pass this ritual down to my girls.
When do you recall enjoying the first time you begin wearing hats and what happened for you in that process?
At the beach just recently. Made me feel more of a woman for some reason. Almost like a switch that made me feel so different and I loved it.
If you were to convince someone to wear a hat, what would be the reasons you would give?
For women to look more elegant and sexy.  I feel women don’t have to show their body to feel alive and renewed. I absolutely feel that a hat can change a woman’s personality.
What ‘s the magic that happens when you put a hat on?
I feel like I stepped back in time during the “I Love Lucy show” women were different back then.
I feel more respected in some ways by men.
When do you like to wear hats and on what occasions?
Since I am new at this,  I still need to buy more hats I want to start trying to wear them during church, on the beach or whenever I can.

On Hat Legacy: Kia Knox

Kia Knox, Los Angeles CA.

Hat legacy!

It’s what happens when people have beliefs surrounding their philosophy about hats! In the next  few weeks we will share what people think about this hats and  how they make an impact on the world and leave a legacy behind!

Why do you like to wear hats?

I wear hats because they speak to my personality without me opening my mouth. Typically, the hats I wear are colorful, fun, large  with brims and I typically  wear them during the day.

Are wearing hats become a regular practice or a legacy for you? Have they been in your family for a while?

Hats are becoming more of my legacy. It don’t go to the mall without trying on hats. I love all shapes sizes but generally choose the larger styles.

When do you recall enjoying the first time you begin wearing hats and what happened for you in that process?

I first fell in love with wearing hats when I was younger. I loved seeing all the ladies at church on Sunday wear them for first Sunday. My grandmother had a hat to match every suit she had for church, and as a child I loved going to her house and I would put them all on and stay in the mirror for hours. I felt somewhat noble when I put on her hats and I’d strut around the house as if I were a ‘dignitary’.  I would Even sit down for dinner wearing her hats.

If you were to convince someone to wear a hat, what would be the reasons you would give?

If I had to convince someone to wear a hat, I’d sell them on the fact that it completes their outfit. It’s one of the easier ways to dress up any outfit. It also shows the free-spirited side of a person. Hats are fun and wearing them shows that you are not afraid to be different.

Do you believe a hat can change one’s personality?

I definitely believe a hat can change one’s personality. It’s almost like you become a different person when you wear a hat. Certain styles of hats bring out a side of a person you may never get the chance to see. I think my confidence level changes the more I wore hats. Some think they are accessories to hide behind, but I saw them as a way to gain more attention.

What ‘s the magic that happens when you put a hat on?

When I wear hats I feel like royalty….All eyes are on me and I become the center of attention. I get the magical feeling like I can do anything,  and conquer anything. “it’s the feeling that I have commanded the attention of the room when I walk in.” A smile seems to easily accompany me when I wear hats.

When do you like to wear hats and on what occasions?

I enjoy wearing hats most on the weekends to the beach and the pool. I wear them to church and during every season. Winter is my favorite season.
